Chrysanthemum segetum — the corn marigold
Chrysanthemum segetum is the botanical name for the corn marigold, a cheerful annual that scatters bright golden daisies across the summer garden. It is one of the species behind our chrysanthemum range within the flower seed collection.
History & origin
The corn marigold is an ancient cornfield flower, once a familiar sight golden-flecking arable fields across Europe before modern farming. That heritage makes it a natural for naturalistic and meadow planting today.
The names are fitting: Chrysanthemum comes from the Greek chrysos (gold) and anthemon (flower) — “golden flower” — while segetum means “of the cornfields,” marking its wild home among the crops.
Botanical characteristics
An easy hardy annual, corn marigold forms branching plants topped with simple, bright yellow daisy flowers above slightly fleshy, blue-green foliage, blooming for weeks through summer. The open, nectar-rich daisies are excellent for bees and hoverflies, making it a fine choice among our wildflowers and pollinator-friendly flowers.
Growing Chrysanthemum segetum from seed
Corn marigold could hardly be easier — sow direct where it is to flower in spring, in sun and ordinary or even poor soil, and thin the seedlings. It also takes well to autumn sowing in milder spots for earlier bloom; deadhead to extend the long flowering season. Our flower growing guide and flower sowing calendar cover the timing.
