Growing flowers from seed

Flower seeds are the simplest, most rewarding way to fill a garden with colour — and far cheaper than buying plants. Our range spans easy annuals like sunflowers, cosmos and nasturtiums, elegant cut flowers for the vase, and perennials that return year after year. Whether you're sowing a single balcony pot, a pollinator border or a full cutting patch, there's a variety to match.

New to growing flowers? Our step-by-step guide shows you how to sow, grow and enjoy flowers from seed.

When and how to sow flower seeds

Most annual flowers — sunflowers, cosmos and zinnias — are started indoors from March or direct-sown after the last frost, flowering the same summer. Hardy perennial flowers and biennials take a little longer to establish but return or self-seed year after year. Every seed packet lists the botanical name, sowing period and flowering time. Short on space? Browse our container-friendly flowers. Prefer a chemical-free garden? See our organic flower seeds.

Choosing and caring for your flowers

Not sure where to start? Choose by how you'll use them — cheerful cut flowers for the vase, low varieties for bedding and borders, or nectar-rich blooms for bees and butterflies — and by your space, as most flowers grow happily in pots, troughs or a sunny border. Once they're growing, give them plenty of sun, water while they establish, and deadhead spent blooms regularly to keep new flowers coming. Sow a fresh batch every few weeks and you'll enjoy colour from late spring right through to the first frosts.

Ready to pick your palette? Cut your own bouquets all summer, or plant for years of returning colour.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I sow flower seeds?
Most annual flowers such as sunflowers, cosmos and zinnias are started indoors from March or direct-sown after the last frost, while hardy annuals and many perennials can be sown a little earlier.
Which flowers are easiest for beginners?
Sunflowers, nasturtiums, cosmos, calendula and cornflowers are quick, forgiving and germinate easily, which makes them ideal first flowers to grow from seed.
What is the difference between annual, biennial and perennial flowers?
Annual flowers grow, flower and finish in one season, biennials flower in their second year, and perennials return year after year — we stock a wide choice of all three.
How long do flower seeds take to germinate?
Most flower seeds germinate in about 7 to 21 days depending on the variety, and each seed packet lists the expected germination time.
Do you ship flower seeds across the EU?
Yes, orders ship from Meppel in the Netherlands with fast EU delivery, and the final shipping cost is shown at checkout.
