When and how to sow herb seeds

Most annual herbs — basil, dill and coriander — are sown indoors from March or direct-sown after the last frost. Hardy perennial herbs like thyme, sage and chives can be started earlier under cover and return year after year. Every seed packet lists the botanical name, sowing period and germination time. Short on space? Browse our container-friendly herbs. Prefer a chemical-free kitchen garden? See our organic herb seeds.

Choosing and caring for your herbs

Not sure where to start? Choose by how you'll use them — culinary herbs for the kitchen, aromatic and tea herbs for scent and infusions — and by your space, as most herbs grow happily in pots, troughs or a sunny border. Once they're growing, give them plenty of light, water when the surface starts to dry, and pinch out the tips regularly to keep plants bushy. Harvest little and often, because frequent picking encourages fresh new leaves right through the season.
