Rock garden flowers — alpines for gravel, walls and troughs

Rock garden flowers are the tough, low-growing plants that thrive in gravel, dry stone walls and shallow troughs where little else will settle. Most are compact perennials, so they belong in our wider come-back-every-year flower range, and they pair beautifully with the rest of our flower seeds. New to sowing? Start with our flower growing guide.

Not sure when to sow alpines? Many need a cold spell to wake up — the calendar shows the timing.

What grows well in a rockery

Look for spreading, sun-loving species that knit between stones and shrug off dry spells. Many carpeting ground-cover varieties double as rockery plants, and low nectar-rich flowers draw bees to the warm gravel. For wall tops and troughs, the same compact habit makes them ideal plants for containers.

Sowing and care

Sharp drainage matters more than rich soil — alpines rot in wet ground, not poor ground. Sow on a gritty mix, keep watering light once established with help from our watering guide, and harden young plants off before an exposed spot using the hardening-off guide.

Planning a low-water border? Pair rockery flowers with our perennial and pollinator ranges for colour that returns each year.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are rock garden flowers?
They are low-growing, drought-tolerant plants — often alpines — suited to gravel beds, dry stone walls, troughs and the gaps between paving and rocks.

Do alpine seeds need cold to germinate?
Many do. A period of cold breaks their dormancy, which is why autumn or late-winter sowing often works best. Check the sowing calendar for each type.

What soil do rockery plants need?
Free-draining, gritty soil. They tolerate poor ground but rot in wet, heavy soil, so add grit or sand and avoid overwatering.

Will they come back every year?
Most rock garden flowers are hardy perennials and return each season once established.

Can I grow them in pots or troughs?
Yes — their compact, drought-tolerant habit makes them ideal for containers, wall tops and alpine troughs.
