Growing herbs from seed

Herb seeds let you grow culinary, aromatic and pollinator-friendly herbs from scratch — the simplest, cheapest way to keep fresh flavour within reach all season. Our range spans culinary classics like basil, parsley and mint, aromatic and perennial herbs such as rosemary, thyme and sage, and specialist picks like capers, lovage and shiso. Whether you're filling a sunny windowsill, a balcony planter or a kitchen-garden bed, there's a variety to match.

New to growing herbs? Our step-by-step guide shows you how to sow, grow and harvest every herb.

When and how to sow herb seeds

Most annual herbs — basil, dill and coriander — are sown indoors from March or direct-sown after the last frost. Hardy perennial herbs like thyme, sage and chives can be started earlier under cover and return year after year. Every seed packet lists the botanical name, sowing period and germination time. Short on space? Browse our container-friendly herbs. Prefer a chemical-free kitchen garden? See our organic herb seeds.

Choosing and caring for your herbs

Not sure where to start? Choose by how you'll use them — culinary herbs for the kitchen, aromatic and tea herbs for scent and infusions — and by your space, as most herbs grow happily in pots, troughs or a sunny border. Once they're growing, give them plenty of light, water when the surface starts to dry, and pinch out the tips regularly to keep plants bushy. Harvest little and often, because frequent picking encourages fresh new leaves right through the season.

Choose your herbs by the senses — the ones you cook with most, and the ones you grow for their scent.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most annual herbs such as basil, dill and coriander are sown indoors from March or direct-sown after the last frost, while hardy perennials like thyme, sage and chives can be started earlier under cover.
Which herbs grow best indoors or on a windowsill?
Basil, chives, parsley, cress and mint are forgiving and thrive in a pot on a sunny windowsill, with no garden needed.
What is the difference between annual and perennial herbs?
Annual herbs such as basil and dill grow, flower and finish in one season, while perennials such as rosemary, thyme, sage and mint come back year after year — we stock a wide choice of both.

Most herb seeds germinate in about 7 to 21 days depending on the variety, and each seed packet lists the expected germination time.
