Pointed cabbage seeds — sweet, tender sweetheart cabbages

Pointed cabbages — the conical "sweetheart" types like Hispi — are the sweetest, most tender cabbages you can grow, with crisp pale hearts that need little cooking. They belong to the species Brassica oleracea and sit within our wider cabbage range. New to growing brassicas? Our vegetable growing guide covers the basics.

Quick to mature and ideal for close spacing, pointed types can give you cabbages over a long season — the calendar shows the windows.

Choosing the right type

There are fast spring and summer pointed types for early cutting, larger-hearted kinds such as Filderkraut for kraut and slaw, and even red pointed cabbages for colour. Many are quick enough to grow as an early "spring greens" crop, cut young before the heart fully fills.

Growing pointed cabbage from seed

Start seed in modules or a seedbed and transplant the young plants into firm, fertile soil, spacing pointed types more closely than round cabbages. Like all brassicas they enjoy a sunny, settled site and benefit from netting against cabbage white butterflies and pigeons. Keep them well watered for fast, sweet hearts.

For an early crop, sow under cover in late winter; sow again through spring and summer for cabbages well into autumn.

What is pointed cabbage?
Pointed or 'sweetheart' cabbage is a conical-headed type of Brassica oleracea with sweet, tender, pale hearts. Hispi is the best-known variety, prized for its mild flavour and quick cropping. Are pointed cabbages quicker to grow than round ones?
Generally yes — many pointed types mature faster and can be planted more closely, and some are grown as an early spring-greens crop cut before the heart fully fills. How do I protect pointed cabbages from pests?
Net the plants against cabbage white butterflies and pigeons, and grow in firm, fertile soil. Keeping them well watered also helps produce sweet, solid hearts. When should I sow pointed cabbage?
Sow under cover in late winter for an early crop, then successionally through spring and summer for cabbages from early summer into autumn.
